A Life Highlight
In April I directed a youth songwriting summit over zoom with the Sisters Folk Festival local arts and education program. Through a series of fortunate connections we were able to get Victor Wooten (grammy award winning bassist, educator, personal hero) to give a masterclass.
Victor opened with a fill in the blank question: "Music is..." The high schoolers thought hard and then answered with words like, "life, connection, truthful, expression, God, emotion, art, feeling, beauty, motivation, niversal language, escape from reality, the rhythm of life, and the way to let your spirit shine." WOAH.
Victor continued, "I love asking this question because when I don't think too hard and I don't have a bass guitar in my hand I go straight to what music is. [Long pause.] But think about this, here are the words you didn't write, nobody said that music was scales, nobody mentioned or named a chord, nobody named an instrument, nobody said music is difficult or challenging or songwriting, nobody said music is fear. So why is it when we go to play music that it's those other words we're thinking about? Why is it that when I pick up the bass I start thinking about the bass, and notes, scales, and chords? Even writing a song is just a tool that allows us to express music. But if we lose sight of the fact that music is beauty, motivation, a universal language, an escape from reality, straight up GOD. If we lose sight of that in the process, what are we playing, what are writing about? Don't ever mistake the tools for what music really is. Because if we can stay true to what it really is. WE will bring our listeners there with us. And isn't that why we listen?"
Here's to that simple and whale of an aspiration.
My very best,
Jenner
