Winter 2018–2019: Things Happen, it's All They Ever Do

I’m writing from the airport in Santiago, Chile, on my way to another 3 month season of music and river guiding on the Futaleufú River in Patagonia with Bio Bio Expeditions. I will be mostly off the grid, and I believe in that sort of thing, so this will be my all encompassing WINTER NEWSLETTER. 

Last night at a hometown house concert in Palo Alto, CA we raised over $1000 for CA fire victims and Earth Justice! This morning I sealed the deal and signed on to work with Baker Booking agency in 2019 (!!!!). In July, I played shows full of people who spoke only German. In June, Cuchulain Kelly and I created a songwriting camp for high schoolers, Cassiopeia Academy for Music Performance & Songwriting (CAMPS). On April 6th, my record Buffalo came out, and the release tour came to a close last night after 4 countries, 12 states, and 66 shows. This year 31 of you signed up for my Patreon page showing exceptional generosity and support for creativity and music. And at this time last year Odell Fox played our last show and the whole JF Music thing really began.

This is all to say, woah. And to give dreaming a high five and a day off for a little reflection. I used to get frustrated and say to my Dad, “I don’t think I'm getting any better at the guitar.” Then he’d show me a video from a year before. I think I’m more impatient than I like to admit, but in the words of Dawes front man, Taylor Goldsmith, “things happen, it’s all they ever do.”

So, MAN, it’s been a year. Things happened. 

Thank you for being part of this community. You all listened to Buffalo, you came out to the shows, and you knew the words! Incredible. 

I have plans for spring tours in the Northeast (March), Colorado (April) and California (May), summer music camps and rafting trips, and recording some new discs.

Adele shows up in disguise at an Adele impersonator competition. My Dad showed this to me the other day, warms the heart right up. 

While you’re at it give Adele’s 21 another listen. The queen. 

Springsteen on Broadway. Comes out on Netflix on December 16th! Don’t ask me how I got lucky enough to see this live. Hard to imagine a more compelling, moving, masterful performance.
