September 2019: Horse Trailer Sessions, Music First Loves
No music will ever be like the music you fall for in high school. Perhaps there is a perfect soup of hormones that only comes to boil from age 14 to 18, leaving you forever nostalgic.
In 2009 I listened for the first time to Bon Iver’s For Emma Forever Ago. I was learning to drive, terrified and free, and had access to a car stereo that played CDs on repeat.
For Emma Forever Ago shot me to the moon and I wanted so badly to understand how. For the next decade I've made music, learned hundreds of songs, and just when I had a question I couldn’t figure out how to ask, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) would put out a new record, answering in a language I didn't know, a new carrot on a new stick.
This is all relevant because Bon Iver just did it again. i,i came out last month and I made the pilgrimage to see the band live in Washington. Blast off, soul, joy, and once again seeming to whisper directly in my ear.
Also last month, a young man came up to me before a show in Colorado acting like he had something to say, but too shy to begin. I gave into the silence, and remembering him from a river trip and concert passed, asked him how he was. He told me he had picked up the guitar in the last year and was loving it. I was excited and asked him about his inspiration for picking the thing up. He said, “you.”
I don't remember what I said back to him. I imagine it was stutter-y. It's at once flattering and strange to have someone give you credit for music. I had a dear friend pass a few weeks ago. His family told me he took his last breath while they were listening to my song, "Lullaby." I feel beyond touched and lucky that they let me be a part of that moment. Sitting here writing I don't feel like music, it's out there, it's maybe more powerful than we understand, but it's not anyone in particular. I try to imagine what I would say to Justin Vernon of Bon Iver if I got to talk to him after his show. Maybe a hug. Or a laugh. In that moment in Colorado I wish I'd hugged the young guitar player and said, "pass it along brother!"
With love,
Jenner

Hans Bilger's new record Meridian came out this month!!! I'm so happy for Hans and glad I finally get to have this saved in my streaming service library. It's a beauty, watch out all you 14-18 year olds.
Shangri-La. Four-part docu-series focusing on creative conversation and the emotional side of music-making, using legendary music producer and Def Jam Records co-founder Rick Rubin's iconic Malibu, CA studio as the backdrop. Rick Rubin is Yoda. Watch him hang out with some of the greatest ever, and see how their music was recorded. •••you can get a free 7 day showtime subscription and binge watch this like I did.
Change one small thing this month that benefits trees, oceans, rivers, soil, the air we breathe, you name it. Just one! It might feel really good. I don't know, I'm trying it too. It's urgent. For ideas or just a great read check out this article.
i,i by Bon Iver. Already been discussed. The master of catharsis. The soul in the machine. And if you're a super fan, you will probably also enjoy this interview with Justin Vernon.
The Flood in Color by Joe Pug. Joe also put a new record out. Embarrassment of riches. 24 minutes, 22 seconds. So good.
