December 2020: Anything New
Bon Winter,
My Grandma sat by the fireplace rocking in her chair with a 2,478 page edition of the Random House Dictionary open across her lap. She cleared her throat, a hush fell over the crowd, and she announced her chosen word, Misocainea...
You tell me. Which of the following definitions for Misocainea is the real one in the dictionary:
An error in a cheese curdling process whereby the cheese forms into long pasta-like shreds and solidifies on the spot.
Blasphemy or treason committed against the Catholic Church during the reign of Pope Benedict II, 700 AD.
Remnant of protrusion or embossment; found in reference to stonework and sculpture.
An abnormal aversion to anything new.
See the "recommends section" for the answer.
Speaking of abnormal aversions to anything new, a condition I don't think I have, just the normal aversion, I just purchased Vitamin D at the grocery store, preparing for my first northern hemisphere winter in years. I'm squarely a part time music teacher now, privately with some wonderful individuals, and as a contractor with the Sisters Folk Festival education programming. My back and neck get angry at me for spending so much time with the computer, but I feel fortunate to have a job, a home, and a dream of biking from show to show again.
Happy Holidays, hope your cheese isn't curdling into pasta like shreds (good one grandma), and hope you're finding bright spots in the newness.

This quote on, "The best thing for being sad," replied Merlin, beginning to puff and blow, "is to learn something. That's the only thing that never fails. You may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. There is only one thing for it then — to learn. Learn why the world wags and what wags it. That is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. Learning is the only thing for you. Look what a lot of things there are to learn."

The Socks. This review just in, "Every time I wear your socks, which are now my socks…..they are a really nice pair of socks!! And fyi….I am pretty picky about my socks too!" – Audrey
And the answer is...#5! Misocainea: "An abnormal aversion to anything new."
The recommendation that goes with it: Dictionary, the game. Feel smarter and laugh harder. The board game version is called Balderdash. Basically, one person picks a word in the dictionary that nobody knows, and each player writes a made up definition for the word. The word chooser also writes a made up definition and the real definition, then they collect everyone's definitions and read them out loud. Each player votes for the definition they think is the real one. You get a point if your definition gets a vote. It's a hoot. One of my absolute favorites.
Give Up The Ghost. A Spotify playlist. Full of songs I want to listen to right now. Including new ones from some of my goodest friends.
Great speakers. I finally took some baby steps into HiFi audio. A nice pair of bookshelf speakers and an amp. It's unbelievable how engaging listening to music can be. I can't turn it off, gotta hear how the next song sounds. The setup: Klipsch RP-600M speakers with a Cambridge AXA35 amp.
P.S. For those of us who can't get enough Dictionary, what is the real definition for Seta:
A stiff hair; bristle or bristle-like part.
An Armenian dish served at the time of the return of winterized sheep; welcomed with music and dance.
The colloquial term for the player who stands just back from the net on Boston's professional women's volleyball team, "The Pelicans."
The temperature reached when two liquids of different viscosities solidify.
Collection of component parts as in, "a seta chess pieces."
