April 2018: BUFFALO Release Day

This record is in D. It begins on the river and finishes in the sea. It starts with a cry and ends in sleep.

TODAY IS THE DAY! And it's a rather stormy one in San Francisco - cars splashing sidewalk walkers, soggy socks...AND MY NEW RECORD BUFFALO IS AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE digital music is consumed.

Grab it here on Bandcamp where they maximize proceeds going to the artist.

Below are the places you can hear Buffalo live in the coming months.

AND below that is a little bit about each song on the record.

Feeling the love,

Jenner

Dams are for Beavers began as a line that made me laugh, and I thought I’d forget. Then lying on my back beside the dam threatened Futaleufu river in Chile in 2016 it became a chorus. Later that year I finished the tune sitting in my humid bedroom in Austin, TX. In 2017 it was played on the steps of a courthouse in Vancouver to stop a mining company's efforts to dam the Taseko River. This spring it will premier at the Wildlife Film Festival as a part of a film called “The Beaver Believers.” AND in the United States, this year 86 dams were torn down in efforts to return the rivers and fisheries to their natural state!!!

Nelda Stockman was her name.
You can’t make up that sort of thing.
Skin like a plastic bag,
I was the only visitor she had.
She stood 4 feet short,
With eyes that always seemed to water.
She was old,
But she was somebody’s daughter.

I met Nelda while living in Austin, TX. I’d visit her in hospice care weekly, and on one afternoon I brought my mandolin, played her some tunes and she managed to say a few words, the first I’d heard. I said goodbye and wrote the song in the tiny park across the street.

Track 3 - The Road

Driving alone from Texas to San Francisco is boring, lonely, and at times scary in "Cliff the Stiff," my wobbly old Honda CRV. When the phone call candidates ran out I started making voice memos. And so The Road was written, trying to hold my bladder, imagining herds of Buffalo rolling across the American West.

Does her giving a tour of the Bass Pro Shops world headquarters in Memphis while you tag along and try to piece in conversation bits count as a date?

Frankly the details have all but swam away
I remember the sturgeon pool and thinking she said
Something about diamonds
Diamonds on the soles of her shoes
Her smile, her dress
And 15 minutes in Memphis

Track 5 - Broken

The song started as “America you’re broken, and there’s no one to blame, broken and I love you just the same.” But “America" seemed a bit zoomed out. Many scratched verses later “broken bicycle” came out.

Track 6 - 29 Palms

According to religious stories, Joshua Trees only grow in two places - the gates of heaven and hell. The US Marine training center is located among the Joshua trees and desert of 29 Palms, CA. The song is based on a story my friend told me of his son’s experience at the 29 Palms marine base.

Filmed at an intimate concert at Spoon Full Farm

Track 7 - Twice as Lonely

Twice as Lonely is what happens when you sit alone by a body of water (with phone service) and get sucked into a social media spiral in which all your ex-lovers are happily coupled to beautiful people.

I was rowing a baggage boat down the rainy Illinois river in Southern Oregon. It was cold. The mood was Irish. I came up with the song and sang it constantly for the 4 day trip so as not to forget. In the studio we were setting up to record a different song, the mics were on, and I started playing the chords to The River Bends Again. Brain and Hans joined in (neither knew the song), the groove was fat, so we put it on the album.

Track 9 - The Beautiful Game

Soccer was all I wanted to do growing up. Friends used to say, “when are you gonna write a soccer song?” Well, here it is. And here’s to all the cleat wearing characters who inspired me along the way.We were close to calling the album “The Beautiful…

Soccer was all I wanted to do growing up. Friends used to say, “when are you gonna write a soccer song?” Well, here it is. And here’s to all the cleat wearing characters who inspired me along the way.

We were close to calling the album “The Beautiful Game,” but Hans said it made him think of long-haired Brazilian dudes, so we opted for Buffalo.

Track 10 - Lullaby

There’s time to waste
But no time to lose
